D. Phillip Sponenberg is professor of Pathology and Genetics at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.
Dr. Sponenberg has long had an interest in the genetic control of color in horses and other livestock. This work has involved collaboration with a large number of scientists as well as horse breeders. In addition to working on coat color, he also is active in efforts to conserve rare breeds of livestock through the programs of the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy.

The book discusses and shows color pictures of rare equine colors, including palomino, buckskin, grulla, dun, Paint Horse, pinto, sabino, roan, cremelo as seen on many breeds such as the Spanish Mustangs (North American Colonial Spanish Horse).
