Natural Horsemanship Explained - From Heart to Hands
by Robert Miller, DVM

The term "Natural Horsemanship" has taken on numerous meanings in recent years; some positive, some negative, and some just plain wrong. In this book, Dr. Miller provides a unique perspective to the movement that has fundamentally changed the way humans interact with horses around the world. The Revolution in Horsemanship
by Robert Miller DVM & Rick Lamb

Order the Paperback edition here

There has been a change in how we treat our horses: We no longer "break" them to harness or saddle; we "gentle" them, so they become our partners, their natural grace and athleticism restored and enhanced through humane and thoughtful methods. The authors describe how the horse's mind works, how horses learn and how the psychological training methods of great horsemen past and present allow the rest of us to achieve extraordinary results with not only our horses but with ourselves. 'The Revolution in Horsemanship' is one of the most important equestrian publishing events of this decade, and is already being hailed as a classic in the field.

Groundwork
Starting Your Horse the Right Way

Roeliff Annon shows how to get familiar with the horse and his mind, followed by groundwork to get the horse ready for training under saddle. His groundwork first establishes a level of confidence and comfort in the horse as well as respect for the handler and his space. The horse is then taught to move in and out of the handler's space, to independently move hind end and front legs. The horse learns many such basic exercises and execute them from the handlers body language signals without fear and relaxed. In many demonstrations Roeliff shows how well timed "release", a basic concept of fine horsemanship, allows the horse to learn easily and with confidence. At the same time, all ground exercises shown here are excellent training for and form the foundation for the future saddle training.
